The Not So Premier League is an invitational league of darts enthusiasts, playing 501 in the futile hope of mastering the trivial task of hucking steel-tip pointies at a target on the wall. The competition is fierce, the egos substantial, the outbursts colorful, and the sportsmanship impeccable.
We love watching the game’s greats performing superhuman feats on the oche, and we endlessly chase the moments where we, too, might hit a crucial ton+ checkout or muster a 12 darter in a deciding leg. Generally, though, its a lot of pub legs.
It's been a long road in the 2020's NSPL, traversing eight grueling weeks of long-format 501 matches, head-to-head against a field of the region's top contenders. It's no small task, and each player absolutely rose to the occasion! Here's how finals night shook out:
In a match that saw both players hitting multiple 3-treble visits, Dustin "The Business" Jensen's scoring boots marched him down to the doubles ahead of the 3x State Champion, James "Skulls" Henninger. A 40% hit rate secured a surprising 6-0 victory.
Despite a valiant effort from Kosta including 13 shots of 95+, a mere 13% success on doubles couldn't overcome Ken "The Gentle Reminder" Ripp's scoring prowess and ton+ outshots. In the end, Ripp claimed a 6-2 victory and a spot in the final.
In a nervy race-to-7 that saw Jensen stumble into a 5-2 lead, Ripp fought back with a hold and a break, threatening to hold throw and come level at 5 all. "The Business" responded with a match-best 14-dart break of throw, followed by a hold in the 11th leg to secure the coveted title of 2020 NSPL Champion.
Yes sports fans, that's right. Three rounds of darts in one evening. With a potential six points on offer for most players, this penultimate week sets the stage for the end of Phase One in the 2020 NSPL. Victory or defeat in Week 4 could genuinely turn the Order of Merit upside down, as the conclusion of the round robin phase solidifies the pool placements for slugfest Phase Two.
Based on the standings after week five, Phase Two splits the league into two pools for weeks 6-8. The top 6 players on the NSPL Order of Merit will compete against each other in "The Deep End,” and players 7-11 do battle in “The Shallow End.” Don’t let the labels fool you: competition in both pools will only escalate, as the cumulative points totals at the end of Phase Two determine seedings for the all-important Phase 3: Finals Week.
In Finals Week, the top three points earners at the end of Phase Two are rewarded with a place in the semi-finals, while those with fewer points must battle their way towards the semis, through a field of single-minded darts lunatics, each fully determined to claim this year’s coveted title.
Competition begins Tuesday, May 5th, 2020. With only 16 spots available on the Road to the Top of the Muddled Middle, will you test your tungsten to take the title of 2020 Not So Premier League Champion?
